Youth programme achieves first agricultural harvest

march 20, 2026

The Centre for Strategic and Policy Studies (CSPS) began the start of harvesting activities for the first cropping season of the Youth Training Programme under the 'Promoting Youth Engagement and Employment in Bio Circular Green (BCG) Agriculture and Food Systems for Food Security' project.

The harvest marks a milestone for the 50 participating youth who have spent the past four months engaged in hands-on practical lessons across designated rice plots at the MPK Limau Manis paddy site in Junjongan.

The first cropping season, which began in late November 2025, introduced the participants to land preparation, transplanting, field maintenance, nutrient management, and crop monitoring under the guidance of Rice Technical Expert Efren S Madayag, with project management provided by Dr Diana Cheong as Project Leader, Dr Kartini Rahman as Deputy Project Leader, and Dr Sufrizul Husseini and Anwar Hashim as Project Coordinators.

Throughout the season, participants applied their training across mini plots, gaining hands-on experience in managing a full production cycle. Post-harvest assessments and field preparation will take place in the coming weeks ahead of the second cropping season scheduled to begin in June 2026.

CSPS highlighted that the progress achieved by the participants demonstrates the value of practical, field based training in encouraging greater youth participation in agriculture.

Supported by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) BIMP EAGA-Republic of Korean Cooperation Fund (BKCF), the programme aims to inspire a new generation of skilled young farmers equipped with practical knowledge of Brunei's rice value chain.
