CSPS to hold Quantitative Research Methods workshop

March 13, 2018

The Centre for Strategic and Policy Studies (CSPS) will hold a nine-day Quantitative Research Methods for Policy Analysis and Decision Making workshop from May 1.

The workshop aims to welcome those who wish to learn more about how to do scientifically acceptable research and how the findings, in particular, quantitative data, can be analysed and provide policy solutions.

Conducting research is the foundation for knowledge advancement and data-driven research is indispensable in the age of analytics. Arguments and decisions backed by thorough research are more persuasive and credible than ones based on mere hunches. Policymakers prefer quantitative data over the more abstract form of qualitative data. Carrying out proper research and making sense out of statistics and numerical data, however, may seem daunting and complex.

Using the case study approach, a range of practical research skills will be provided to assist in public and corporate policy making: How to set up researchable policy questions, design research plans, different sampling methods, ways to measure abstract concepts, collect quantitative data, analyse and interpret data, and effectively report and communicate findings. Participants will also gain hands-on experience on the use of industrial standard software such as Microsoft Excel, SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) and GIS (Geographic Information Systems).
